This is a request from PlayStationMan55. In a performance of this song by Burl Ives, (a man whom some think I resemble) with Johnny Cash, Burl introduces the song as one coming from the Civil War, but an amusing song rather than belligerent. He claims that the term ‘Goober peas’ arose when a farmer named Goober pulled up what he thought was a weed and found pea-like swellings in the roots. Of course the ‘weed’ was a pea-nut or as Johnny called it a ‘ground-nut’.
